Dr. Michael J. Prueher

Portrait of Dr. Michael J. PrueherFor 25 years, Dr. Michael Prueher has been patiently listening to his patients at Dental South, working to be sure he understands their oral health care needs so he can formulate the best treatment plan for their care.

“You have to listen to your patients if you are going to deliver the best care for their unique situation,” emphasizes Dr. Prueher. “If you do a complete and thorough examination, and then review and discuss the diagnosis and treatment options with a patient honestly and compassionately, then the outcome is always positive. A well-educated patient makes better decisions about their dental care.”

Dr. Prueher bought the Dental South practice in 1990. He has been providing quality care to patients since graduating from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1984 with a Degree in Dental Surgery (DDS). He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota in biology. He has worked at clinics in both Minneapolis and St. Paul and for a time, in Colorado. He grew up in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

What drew Dr. Prueher to a career as a dentist? “For me, dentistry is both an art and a skill. That attracted me, and I also felt motivated by helping people with their health care needs. Dentistry just seemed like a perfect fit.”

He has taken advanced courses in dental implants, laser technology for dentistry, and in the ClearCorrect invisible braces system. He is a member of the Minnesota Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the Saint Paul District Dental Society. He was recognized recently as a “Top Doctor” by the national organization Doctors in the Community.

Making sure that Dental South provides patients with access to the latest technology is important to Dr. Prueher. The clinic’s use of laser technology for periodontal care is an example. “I researched the soft tissue diode laser prior to it being approved by the FDA and found that periodontal treatment was being shown to have a consistent and far greater success rate when this technology was applied in conjunction with standard procedures.”

Another example is the use of the Diagnodent, which is a high-tech cavity detector with 98% accuracy. “It has allowed us to detect dental decay much earlier than previous techniques,” says Dr. Prueher. “This translates into smaller fillings because detection is so much sooner. Smaller fillings are good for the tooth structure and pulpal system for our patients.”

Dr. Prueher and his wife Melissa have six children – three boys and three girls. In his spare time, Dr. Prueher enjoys hunting and fishing, woodworking, and being involved in the Boy Scouts with with his sons.
